1953年他生于加拿大的伦敦[1]，父母为 Edward H. Haggis 和 Mary Yvonne (née Metcalf)[2]。他家是个天主教家庭[3]，不过直到加入 Church of Scientology 以前他却自认为是一个无神论者[4]。由于他父母在当地拥有剧院，因此他获得了在剧院工作的许多经验[5]。他先在St. Thomas More Elementary School 上学[6]，后来由于被希区柯克和尚盧·高達所影响，开始到 H. B. Beal Secondary School 学习艺术[1]。在他看了米开朗基罗·安东尼奥尼导演的1966年电影 Blowup 后，他开始怀着成为一名时尚摄影师的愿望到英格兰旅游[1]。后来他回到了加拿大的 Fanshawe College 学习电影摄影[1]。1975年，他搬到加州洛杉矶居住，开始从事为影视编写剧本的工作[1][5]。
