《南非國歌》是把讚美詩的選段《天佑南非》（Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika）和《南非的吶喊》（Die Stem van Suid-Afrika）與用英語的新文字結合起來的一支混合歌，在世界上是唯一的新形式國歌，憑藉一種音調開始並且在另一種音調中結束。歌詞使用了南非最常使用的五種語言：科薩語（第一節前兩行），祖魯語（第一節後兩行），塞索托語（第二節），南非語（第三節）和英語（第四節）[1]。
《天佑南非》是一名衛理宗的學校老師伊諾科·桑通加在1897年作成。它最初被作為一首教堂讚美詩來唱，但是之後成為反對種族隔離政府的政治挑戰的行動。《南非的吶喊》是柯內里斯·賈柯巴斯·蘭根豪芬（C. J. Langenhoven）在1918年作成。《南非的吶喊》是和從1936年到1957年使用的天佑吾王共用的國歌。[來源請求]，直到1995年《南非的吶喊》成為唯一的國歌。1995年，南非政府在納爾遜·曼德拉下採用《天佑南非》和《南非的吶喊》兩種歌作為國歌，直到它們在1997年被合併成當今的國歌。
