大火成岩省

世界上若干最大性的大火成岩省,用暗紫色标示在地质图上。

大火成岩省是在地壳中规模非常巨大的火成岩的累积,包括侵入喷出英语entrusive。1992年,研究者首次使用这个术语来描述面积大于100,000平方千米的火成岩累积(略大于葡萄牙的面积)— mafic火成岩喷出或在深处侵入发生在一个极短的地质时间间隔内:几百万年甚至更短。[1] 基性的玄武岩海床与其他正常的板块构造的地质结果不属于大火成岩省。[2]

现在,大火成岩省的外延不仅包括基性,也包括各种类型的火成岩大面积累积。可细分为“大火山岩省”(large volcanic provinces,LVP)与“大深成岩省”(large plutonic provinces,LPP)。[3]

大火成岩省基本上是由于地幔热柱升至地壳的结果。[4]

某些大火成岩省现在还是完整的,如印度的德干暗色岩;其他大火成岩省被板块构造运动所肢解,如中大西火成岩省英语Central Atlantic Magmatic Province(CAMP)分布在巴西、北美东部、西北非。
