Clupea harengus

大西洋鲱（学名：Clupea harengus）是地球上资源最丰富的鱼类之一，在大西洋的东西两部分都可以发现集成一大群的大西洋鲱。成鱼可以长至45厘米长（大约18英寸），重半公斤左右。它们以小型甲壳类动物、磷虾和小鱼为食，也是海豹，鲸，鳕鱼和其他大型肉食鱼类等天然掠食者的食物。 ·大西洋鲱很长时间以来是新英格兰和加拿大沿海省份经济的重要组成部分。这是因为大西洋鲱经常在相对近岸的海区聚集成海量的一大群，尤其是在缅因湾半封闭的冷水区和圣劳伦斯湾中。大西洋鲱鱼群经测量尺寸达到4立方千米，由大约40亿条鱼组成。

鲱鱼类是地球上最重要的的鱼种，其中最常被提及的就是大西洋鲱（吉尼斯世界纪录）。它们在转换浮游生物的产物，维持远洋带中甲壳类生物、糖虾和磷虾的生物总量上起着举足轻重的作用。另一方面，它们也是更高一层食物链上生物的主要食物。大西洋鲱在生态学上所起的作用如此重要，但是人类还未完全探明其中的原因。一个可能的推测是，它们在生态学作用上起到的支配作用来自于它们生活在海量的并快速游动的群体中的习性。

大西洋鲱在大西洋的东西岸都可以发现。它们的分布区域相当之广，从北大西洋水域如缅因湾，圣劳伦斯湾，芬迪湾，拉布拉多海，戴维斯海峡，波弗特海，丹麦海峡，挪威海，北海，波罗的海（在瑞典海域有一种名为strömming大西洋鲱亚种）, 英吉利海峡，凯尔特海，爱尔兰海和比斯开湾。虽然大西洋鲱在大西洋北部北冰洋周围的海域能被发现，但人们并不认为它们是一个在北冰洋生存的物种。

鲱鱼几乎是最为壮观的集群鱼类（"obligate schoolers" under the old definitions）。它们聚集成一个由千百万个体形成的鱼群。这些鱼群横渡大洋。一个鲱鱼群在总体上有非常精确的安排，以使鱼群能够维持一个相对稳定的巡游速度。由成千上万个个体组成的鱼群一般循一个三角形路线在它们的产卵地（比如挪威南部海域），索饵场（如冰岛）和育苗场（如挪威北部海域）进行迁徙。因为经过迁徙，鲱鱼让自己的后代得到了充足的食物，所以这样的三角形之旅是很重要的。一个鲱鱼群能做出很快的反应以规避捕食者；它们有很敏锐的听觉。在潜水员和无人遥控潜水器的周围，鱼群能形成一个完全没有任何个体在内的空间，类似一个液泡（喷泉效应）。但是鱼群的这种现象远不是在理解的基础上做出的反应，especially the implications on swimming and feeding-energetics. 很多企图解释集群功能的学说被提出，比如①为了迷惑捕食者。② 为了将减少被个体被发现的危险。③为了更好的方向定位。④为了捕食同步。但是集群生活也有不利的一面，比如①氧气和食物的消耗。②排泄物在呼吸介质中的积累。总的说来，集群行动很可能在能量的节约上占有优势，虽然目前在这方面还有很大的争议。

大西洋鯡一般而言是非常脆弱的魚，他們有特別大且敏感的鰓表面，接觸異物可能會使他們失去鱗片。雖然在一些被清潔過的河口可以觀察到大西洋鯡的回流，但因為水中的高度污染使他們從世界各地的河口撤離，幼魚的出現被作為水質潔淨度和含氧量的生物指標。
