夾竹桃科是雙子葉植物綱，龍膽目的一個科，其模式屬為羅布麻屬（Apocynum）。有喬木、灌木、草本、藤本植物，大约有250属2000余种，主要產於熱帶和亞熱帶地區，許多種類是原生於熱帶雨林的高大喬木，也有些是原生於溫帶地區的多生生草本植物，中国有46属176种，主要分布在长江以南各地。這些植物通常都含有乳汁且多數種類是有毒植物，誤食時會中毒。

分類

夾竹桃科約有164屬，約1500種。近期的分類主張將蘿藦科的種類併入到夾竹桃科內，新的夾竹桃科有5亞科，約有415屬，約4555種。

• Rauvolfioideae （蘿芙木亞科） - 84屬，980種。
• Apocynoideae （夾竹桃亞科） - 77屬，860種。
• Periplocoideae （杠柳亞科） - 31屬，180種。
• Secamonoideae （鯽魚藤亞科） - 9屬，170種。
• Asclepiadoideae （蘿藦亞科） - 214屬，2365種。

後面三個亞科在以前是屬於蘿藦科。

分佈

白色夾竹桃

夾竹桃科的植物主要分佈在熱帶地區：

• 印度和馬來西亞的雨林及沼澤：小至非常高的常綠喬木，這些植物通常都具有支持根，例如：黑板樹屬、Dyer。
• 澳洲北部：小型的常綠喬木，例如：海檬果屬、玫瑰树属。
• 非洲和印度的落葉森林：較小型的喬木，例如：假虎刺屬、Wrightia、Holarrhena。
• 熱帶美洲、印度、緬甸、馬來半島：常綠喬木與灌木，例如：蘿芙木屬、馬茶花屬、Acokanthera。
• 中美洲：緬梔屬，花蠟質，白色或粉紅色，有甘香味。
• 南美洲、非洲、馬達加斯加：許多藤本種類，例如：卷枝藤屬。
• 地中海地區：夾竹桃屬，洋夾竹桃是本屬較有名的植物。
• 歐洲溫帶地區：蔓長春花屬、Vincetoxicum。
• 北美洲：羅布麻屬，本屬植物印地安麻可做為纖維的原料。

形態

葉單葉，葉通常對生或輪生，無托葉。花通常很顯眼，軸射對稱（整齊花），聚傘花序或總狀花序（稀密繖花序或單生）。兩性花，萼片合生，萼片5，花序頂生或腋生，雄蕊著生於花冠筒內，通常為子房上位。果實為核果、漿果、蒴果或蓇突果。

长春花

用途

蔓長春花是常見的觀賞植物，夾竹桃科的一些種類在以前有經濟上的用途。

Carpodinus、卷枝藤屬、Hancornia、Funtumia和Mascarenhasia等屬，可做橡膠的原料。

布希曼人（Bushmen）將馬麒麟屬的乳汁塗在箭頭上，當做箭毒使用。

下列各屬可做觀賞植物：Amsonia、夾竹桃屬、蔓長春花屬、假虎刺屬、黃蟬屬、緬梔屬、黃花夾竹桃屬、紅蟬花屬。

Rauvolfia cafra 是奎寧樹，蛇根木可以提取生物鹼 reserpine 和 rescinnamine。

一些會干擾心臟功能的藥物，例如 glycoside，下列各屬可做為這類藥物的原料：Acokanthera、羅布麻屬、海檬果屬、夾竹桃屬、黃花夾竹桃屬、Strophantus。

羅布麻屬植物在以前被美洲的原住民做為提取纖維的原料。
