多數的西方國家軍隊廢除了排斥同性戀的政策，參與北約組織的26個成員國家中，超過20個國家允許男同性戀、女同性戀和雙性戀在軍中服務。聯合國安理會的五個常任理事國中，聯合王國和法國兩者允許，而其他三者則不然：中國禁止男同性戀和女同性戀公開在軍中服務[來源請求]；俄羅斯在和平時期禁止男同性戀和女同性戀在軍中服務，但在戰爭時期時則允許部分男同性戀從軍（參見下方）；美國（參見不問，不說）技術性地允許男同性戀和女同性戀在軍中服務，但必須保密並維持單身。以色列是中東地區唯一允許男同性戀與女同性戀公開在軍中服務的國家。
國際間各國對於軍中同性戀人事的政策和態度顯得相當多樣。一些國家允許男同性戀與女同性戀公開身份在軍中服務，並給予他們同等權利及保障他們的同性戀基本權利。多數國家則是既不禁止也不支持同性戀於軍中服務，只有少數國家繼續完全禁止任何同性戀者在軍中服役。
而像美國這樣軍中同性戀議題被高度政治化的國家，不必然是多數國家的情況。總得來說，性取向在這些文化更被當成一個人身份認同的一部分。
