原產於墨西哥和中美洲地區，生長在河畔的沙地上，屬於柳葉菜科的草本植物，為二年生草本。因為這種植物只在夜晚開花、白天凋謝，所以又名「Evening Primrose」，中文譯為“晚櫻草”，日文譯為“待宵草”。
