桑科植物包括40个属，超过一千种，广泛分布在热带和亚热带地区，只有少数种能生活在温带地区，中国有16属约160余种。
本科植物皆為木本，本科共同特徵為組織中具有乳汁，单叶互生，托叶明显；花小单性，形成花序，果實為多花聚合果。常见的有桑树、无花果树、榕樹、菩提树和面包树等。
