法越戰爭，又稱第一次印度支那戰爭，戰事自1945年9月至1954年7月，是法國為恢復中南半島殖民統治而進行的一場戰爭。法國和美國於1950年12月簽訂《共同防禦協定》，美國軍方提供給法國大批武器裝備。1954年5月奠邊府戰役結束，迫使法國簽訂停戰協定，法軍退出越南戰場，由美軍接續戰事。
1883年，中南半島成為法屬殖民地。二戰期間，日本帝國佔領中南半島，二戰結束，越南、老撾相繼宣布獨立。1945年9月23日，在美、英支持下，法國派遣遠征軍接管越南。

法國在奠邊府戰敗后，開始與越盟進行和平交涉，在日內瓦會議中成立協定，承認越南民主共和國獨立。不過對此，在戰爭中積極支援法國、深怕共產主義在東南亞抬頭的美國，仍以北緯17度為線，繼續在南方扶持保大帝。
不久后，法國因為忙於處理非洲殖民地，將中南半島托付美國。1955年10月，在美國大力支持下，吳廷琰以其為后盾，一掃反對勢力發動政變，成立越南共和國，成為越南戰爭的導火線。1956年6月，法軍完全撤退，結束所有在越南的支配。
