血皮草科共有14属约75种，全部生长在南半球，主要分布在南非、澳大利亚、新几内亚和南美洲。又稱為袋鼠爪花科（kangaroo paw family）[1]。
1981年的克朗奎斯特分类法将其列入百合目，1998年根据基因亲缘关系分类的APG 分类法将其列入鸭跖草目。
