风信子科共有约30属300-700余种，都是多年生草本植物，有鳞茎，其中许多种类是观赏花卉植物。
1981年的克朗奎斯特分类法将其中这些属都分入百合科，属于百合目；1998年根据基因亲缘关系分类的APG 分类法将这些属单独列为新设立的天门冬目下的独立科，2003年新修订的APG II 分类法认为本科可以选择性地和天门冬科合并。其中有些原来属于本科的属也被划出到其他科，如霞花属 （Camassia）和肥皂根属 （Chlorogalum）等。
