南亚语系分布在中国云南省，越南、老挝、缅甸、 柬埔寨、泰国、马来西亚南部还有印度尼科巴群岛和比哈尔邦等地区，包括孟-高棉语族和蒙达语族（又译捫達語族）兩個语族。
蒙达语族包括蒙达里语、桑塔利语、霍语、科尔库语等約22種語言。孟-高棉语族包括柬埔寨語、孟語、佤語、德昂語、布朗語、越南語等約147種語言，其中越南語的系屬還在爭議中。
很多學者認為南亚语系與壯侗語系有關係，而其他学者则提出南亚语系和南岛语系同源。
