2001年，美国电影学会從400片提名電影中，評選出100片百年來最偉大的驚悚片名單，作為美国电影学院的“百年百大”系列的一个重要部分——“AFI百年百大驚悚電影”（AFI's 100 Years... 100 Thrills）。

「緊張大師」亞弗列德·希區考克在百大驚悚片中，主導了9部電影（《驚魂記》、《北西北》、《鳥》、《後窗》、《迷魂記》、《火車怪客》、美人計、電話情殺案、蝴蝶夢），在前7名囊括了3部作品，包括第一名影片在內。史蒂芬·史匹伯以6部電影居次，在前10名中占有2部作品。斯坦利·库布里克以5部作品再次之。
