梅西爾 77（也稱為NGC 1068）是一個位於鯨魚座的棒旋星系，距離大約4千7百萬光年。梅西爾 77是一個在可見光的波段上被塵埃遮蔽掉活躍星系核（AGN）的活躍星系，在分類上是塞佛特2星系。被遮蔽的分子盤和熱電漿的直徑首先被VLBA和VLA測量出來，環繞著核心的熱塵土隨後也被VLTI的中紅外線干涉儀（MIDI，Mid-IR Interferometric instrument）測量出來。[2]

梅西爾 77是在1780年由梅向發現的，但當初被標示為星雲。然後梅向將它的發現通知梅西爾，並編入梅西爾的星表中。[4]。梅西爾和威廉·赫歇爾都描述這個星系是一個星團為[4]。今天，這個天體被確認是一個星系。
