WebP (發音"weppy")[5][6]，一種同時提供了有損壓縮與無損壓縮的圖形檔格式[7] 。Google在購買On2 Technologies後發展出來的格式[8]，衍生自影像編碼格式VP8[9]，以BSD授權條款釋出。[10]
WebP最初在2010年釋出，目標是在最小的壓縮損失下，提供網路傳輸用的開放圖片格式，最直接的競爭者就是已經流通多年的圖片檔案格式- JPEG。WebP希望能夠達到和JPEG同水準的圖片品質，但是更小的檔案，以減少圖片檔的傳送時間。 [11]

目前只有Google Chrome和Opera瀏覽器原生支援WebP格式[12][13]，而Google Chrome自12版開始支援WebP的漸進式解碼功能[14]。此外所有可以原生播放WebM影像的瀏覽器，也可以透過javascript來顯示WebP影像[15][16]。开源图片浏览工具Ez看图也可以支持查看WebP图像[17]。

x264的開發者之一：Jason Garrett-Glaser，針對WebP做出了幾點評論[18]，根據和其他編碼器（JPEG、x264、Theora）測試的結果，他認為WebP的影像品質是最差的，多數是在模糊度方面。他也評論Google應該等到WebP可以超越JPEG之後再發佈。不過在2011年4月20日，他提到新的WebP編碼器表現的非常好，超越JPEG是指日可待的。

根據Google自己的測試，在有損壓縮的狀況下，WebP比同樣畫質的JPEG少了25% ～ 34%的檔案大小 [19]。而在無損壓縮的情形中，比起用libpng產生的PNG圖片，WebP少了34%的檔案大小，也比用pngout再處理過的PNG圖片少了26%的檔案大小 [20]。
