石莼纲是绿色大型藻类中的一纲[4]，主要是以超结构的形态学和其他物种相区分。石莼属于此纲。其他较知名的物种还有软丝藻和伞藻等。 其它淡水种有刚毛藻属、根枝藻属和黑孢藻属等，出现在受人为污染环境或操控不佳的水缸中而被视为杂藻。
石莼纲在栖地和形态学较多变而不易辨别。藻体大部分是由叶状体 (类似陆地植物的叶片)所构成。
