African-American literature

Kay, massa, you just leave me, me sit here, great fish jump up into da canoe, here he be, massa, fine fish, massa; me den very grad; den me sit very still, until another great fish jump into de canoe; but me fall asleep, massa, and no wake 'til you come…

(Pre-recent) I been flown it
近期(Recent) I done fly it a
之前(Pre-present) I did fly it
(Past Inceptive) I do fly it
現在(Present) I be flying it
(Immediate) I'm a-fly it
遠期(Post-immediate) I'm a-gonna fly it
(Indefinite future) I gonna fly it

「He been done work」意為「他很早之前就已經完成了工作」。
「He done been work」意為「直到最近,他已經工作了很長一段時間」。

這種「been」(記作「BIN」[43])的語體用法需要重讀,且與非重讀的形式有着明顯的區別:「She BIN running」( 即「She has been running for a long time」,她已經持續跑了很長時間了),以及「She been running」(即「She has been running」,她一直在跑)。 例如,當聽到「I like your new dress」(我喜歡你的新裙子)時,可能的回答是「Oh, I been had this dress」,即說話者這件裙子已經買了很久了,並不是新的。[45]

[46] He be working Tuesdays. He works frequently or habitually on Tuesdays.
He is always working.
He keeps on working.
He been working. He has been working.
He finna go to work. He is about to go to work.a 他正要去工作。

^a 在其他語言變體中,「Finna」意為「fixing to」;[48]亦可寫作「fixina」、「fixna」、「fitna」或「finta」。[49]

除此之外,「come」(可能是也可能不是助動詞[50])可用來表達說話者的憤怒,例如「Don't come acting like you don't know what happened and you started the whole thing」(標準英語:「Don't try to act as if you don't know what happened, because you started the whole thing」,意為「不要試圖假裝你不知道發生了什麼,因為一切都是因你而起」)。[51]

但是,與這些語言變體不同的是,部分非洲裔美國人白話英語使用者還用「ain't」來取代「don't」、「doesn't」和「didn't」(例如,「I ain't know that」)。
  • 雙重否定仍然表示否定:例如句子「I didn't go nowhere」的意思是「我哪兒也沒有去」;「I didn't know nothing」的意思是「我什麼也不知道」。 還存在有三重或多重否定,例如「I don't know nothing about no one no more」(標準英語:「I don't know anything about anyone anymore」)。
  • 在否定結構中,「nobody」、「nothing」等不定代詞可以同否定動詞小品詞倒置,表示強調(例如「Don't nobody know the answer」、「Ain't nothin' goin' on」)。

例如:「You crazy」(標準英語:「You are crazy」),或是「She my sister」(標準英語:「She's my sister」)。此種語法現象也可見於疑問句:「Who you?」(標準英語:「Who're you?」),以及「Where you at?」(標準英語:「Where are you (at)?」)。另一方面,重讀的「is」不可省略:「She is my sister」。
例如,「I don't know where he is」不可簡略作「I don't know where he」,因為在標準英語中,縮寫為「I don't know where he's」是不正確的。(不過「'I don't know where he at」是適當的表述。)
例如:「She write poetry」(標準英語:「She writes poetry」)。
例如:「my momma sister」(標準英語:「my mother's sister」)
  • 使用「it」和「they」來表示某物的存在,這同標準英語中的「there is」和「there are」相同。[58]
  • 在疑問句中的語法不同:「Why they ain't growin'?」(標準英語:「Why aren't they growing?」),「Who the hell she think she is?」(標準英語:「Who the hell does she think she is?」),缺少標準英語中的倒裝,因此也不需要使用助動詞「do」。[59]

(Do the Right Thing,1989)
(Jungle Fever,1991)
(The Best Man,1999)

Ann Arbor School District)。

Language scholars long ago denied that the myth of a standard American dialect has any validity. The claim that any one dialect is unacceptable amounts to an attempt of one social group to exert its dominance over another. Such a claim leads to false advice for speakers and writers and immoral advice for humans. A nation proud of its diverse heritage and its cultural and racial variety will preserve its heritage of dialects. We affirm strongly that teachers must have the experiences and training that will enable them to respect diversity and uphold the right of students to their own language.」
