前額葉皮質（prefrontal cortex, PFC）位於大腦額葉的前部、運動皮層和前運動皮層的前方，包含布羅德曼分區中的BA8、BA9、BA10、BA11、BA12、BA13、BA14、BA24、BA25、BA32、BA44、BA45、BA46，以及BA47區^[1]。

一般認為，前額葉皮質與人生存的慾望以及性格有關^[2]。具體來說，前額葉皮質涉及與計劃相關的高層次認知活動、人格表現、作出決定的過程，以及調節社會活動、語言功能的某些方面等行為^[3]^[4]，能根據內在目標組織思考與行為^[5]。

按照細胞結構學來講，腦前額葉外皮通過第四層大腦皮質而被定義存在。運動前區皮層可以通過幾種方法來分，其中一種把它分為：前額腦區底部和腹內側前額葉皮質（英語：ventromedial prefrontal cortex）；背外側前額葉皮層（英語：dorsolateral prefrontal cortex）；前扣帶皮層和後扣帶皮層。
