NGC 6946，也是所知的焰火星系 (Fireworks Galaxy)，Arp 29，和 Caldwell 12"，是個距離大約一千萬光年遠的中間螺旋星系，位置界於仙王座和天鵝座交界處，是威廉·赫歇爾在1798年9月9日發現的。NGC 6946因為緊挨着銀道面，因此受到銀河系的星際物質嚴重的遮蔽。在NGC 6946這個星系中已經發現了10顆超新星：SN 1917A、SN 1939C、SN 1948B、SN 1968D、SN 1969P、SN 1980K、SN 2002hh、SN 2004et、SN 2008S、和SN 2017eaw[2][3][4]。這使得它成為在100年內，這種類型事件最多產的已知星系。相比之下，銀河系，恆星數量是NGC 6946的2倍，每個世紀卻只有一顆超新星的事件[5]。它還擁有一顆失敗的超新星，形成潛在黑洞的N6946-BH1[6]。
