羅蘭士·費斯賓出生於喬治亞州奧古斯塔，是初中數學和科學老師哈麗特·貝爾（Hattie Bell，娘家姓Crawford）及少年矯正官小羅蘭士·約翰·費斯賓（Laurence John Fishburne，Jr.）的兒子。他的父母在童年時代離婚後，他和母親一起搬到紐約市布魯克林區。父親每月見一次他。[2][3]費斯賓畢業於紐約林肯廣場學院（Lincoln Square Academy），該學院於1980年代關閉[4]。

費斯賓於1985年與演員海娜·O·莫斯在紐約結婚[5]，育有兩子，分別是1987年出生的朗斯頓·費斯賓（英語：Langston Fishburne）和1991年出生的女兒莫塔娜·費斯賓（Montana Fishburne）[5][6][7]。莫斯與費斯賓在1990年代離婚[4]。

1992年至1995年間，費斯賓和演員維多莉亞·迪拉德（英語：Victoria Dillard）交往[8]。
