嗜血桿菌屬是巴斯德氏菌科下的一個革蘭氏陰性的，多形性的球桿菌屬。[1][2]作為典型的球桿菌，因為他們的形狀有很大變化空間，他們被歸類為多形性細菌。該屬包括一些能顯著致病的細菌，如流感嗜血桿菌能造成敗血病及兒童的細菌性腦膜炎，再如杜克雷嗜血桿菌是軟性下疳的病原細菌。該屬的所有細菌都是需氧菌或兼性厭氧菌。
代謝[編輯]
嗜血桿菌屬的細菌不能在血瓊脂平板培養基上生長，因為他們都需要至少有以下一種血液因子：血紅素，煙酰胺腺嘌呤二核苷酸。巧克力瓊脂是很好的嗜血桿菌生長培養基，因為它使得這些因子更易獲取。[3]另外，嗜血桿菌在「葡萄球菌劃線法」培養：葡萄球菌和嗜血桿菌在同一瓊脂平板培養基中培養時，嗜血桿菌的菌落經常會在更大的葡萄球菌菌落旁形成「衛星菌落」，因為葡萄球菌的代謝產物中有嗜血桿菌生長所必需的血液因子。
