Smplayer是一個基於Qt庫，用Mplayer作為後端的媒體播放器。雖然是Qt程式，但是在Gnome下相容良好。 SMPlayer有一個特色功能是它能記住你播放任何檔案時候的設置。

在 0.6.7 版本, SMPlayer 是利用 NSIS 分發而生成安裝 (之前是 Inno Setup)。 安裝程式能夠在安裝過程中下載和安裝最新的 MPlayer 和 MPlayer 代碼包， 當然也提供了可離線安裝的 MPlayer 安裝程式。[6]
Unix-like 系統[編輯]
由於 SMPlayer 是在 MPlayer 的基礎上基於 Qt 構建的，這使得它可移植性很強，MPlayer 和 Qt 所有的主流系統上可用了。在沒有移植到的系統上，也可以通過其他 Unix 和 Linux 上的 binary compatibility 來執行程式。
除了 Windows 版本，官方還提供了 Ubuntu 的二進制版本。很多發行版在它們的軟件庫中提供了 SMPlayer 軟件套件。
對於 FreeBSD，SMPlayer is available for installation from source via the ports tree and also available as binary packages for most major FreeBSD releases. 對於 FreeBSD，SMPlayer 可以通過 ports tree 從原始碼安裝， 大多數主流 FreeBSD 發行版也提供了二進制版本。
OpenBSD 也在 ports collection 提供了二進制版本。
不過 SMPlayer 不提供 NetBSD 和 DragonFly BSD的版本， 無論是二進制版本還是在 pkgsrc。但是， NetBSD 能夠輕易執行 FreeBSD 二進制版本。
