2012年12月21日剧组主创确认已经和5位主演签好第九季的合同，不出意外第九季将是最后一季[5][6][7]；但是在2013年初的电视评论家协会冬季媒体见面会上CBS没有宣布续订的消息，[8]最终在2013年1月30日CBS正式宣布续订第九季也是全剧最后一季。[9][10][11]

在2013年5月13日播出的第八季最后一季中拿着小黄伞的女子露面打算购买1张到远汉普顿的车票，随后的演职表显示由克里斯汀·米利欧缇饰演“黄伞女孩”，[12]随后次日CBS确认这名角色就是泰德未来的妻子[13][14][15]；随后在2013年5月15日的节目展示会上确认最后一季将讲述巴尼和罗宾婚礼的那个周末54个小时，且泰德的朋友都将在泰德之前遇到“老妈”[16][17]；在5月17日宣布克里斯汀·米利欧缇将成为第九季常驻演员，这是该剧首次添加常驻演员，这意味着标题人物“老妈”将登场第九季大部分剧集中。[18][19]

2013年6月17日CBS宣布剧终季将于2013年9月23日开播，并且首播将长达1小时[20][21]；7月7日主创克雷格·托马斯（英语：Craig Thomas (screenwriter)）在推特上表示这一季和往常一样将有24集。[22]

2013年6月12日二十世纪福克斯公司宣布该剧将参加2013年夏季的圣地亚哥国际动漫展，该剧主要演员都将在7月20日的动漫展与观众见面，这将是该剧第一次参加动漫展也是最后一次参加。[25][26]
