中国鸟属（属名：Sinornis，意为“中国的鸟”）是属于反鸟类的原始鸟类，体长约17公分，翼展估计长约35公分[1]，相当于现今小型雀鸟的体型。中国鸟生存于下白垩纪晚期的阿普第阶（约1亿2000万年前左右），正模标本（编号 BNHM BPV 538）在1987年发现于中国辽宁朝阳的胜利乡，出土自九佛堂组地层，是辽西地区最早被发现的鸟类，也是促使热河生物群于1990年代后期被发现的主要生物之一[2]。
该属目前仅有一个有效物种，即模式种三塔中国鸟（S. santensis），于1992年由美国芝加哥大学的古生物学家保罗·塞里诺（Paul C. Sereno）与北京自然博物馆的古生物学家饶成刚共同正式发表、描述与命名。种名“三塔”是化石所出土的朝阳地区在早期非正式的代称，指的是朝阳城区迄辽代建成的三座佛塔（南塔、北塔和东塔）[3]。

美国芝加哥大学著名教授保罗·塞里诺（Paul C. Sereno）等人认为于同一地层发现的华夏鸟是中国鸟的次异名。他们指出这两者的结构非常相似，同样有尾综骨的独有衍征。[4]不过，中国古生物学家周忠和等人却指出华夏鸟较中国鸟为大，第一指较短及直，其上的爪也较长，故相信两者应有分别。[5]另外于2008年，李建军等人在描述查布华夏鸟的论文中亦认为两者是有分别的。[6]后来于2010年的研究中认为两者在爪及指的长度、臀骨及尾综骨的大小也有分别，故两者并非异名。[7]
