大西洋鲱学名Clupea harengus)是地球上资源最丰富的鱼类之一,在大西洋的东西两部分都可以发现集成一大群的大西洋鲱。 成鱼可以长至45厘米长(大约18英寸), 重半公斤左右。它们以小型甲壳类动物、磷虾和小鱼为食,也是海豹鳕鱼和其他大型肉食鱼类等天然掠食者的食物。

大西洋鲱很长时间以来是新英格兰加拿大沿海省份经济的重要组成部分。这是因为大西洋鲱经常在相对近岸的海区聚集成海量的一大群,尤其是在缅因湾半封闭的冷水区和圣劳伦斯湾中。大西洋鲱鱼群经测量尺寸达到4立方千米,由大约40亿条鱼组成。

生态学上的重要性[编辑]

鲱鱼类是地球上最重要的鱼种 ,其中最常被提及的就是大西洋鲱(吉尼斯世界纪录)。它们在转换浮游生物的产物,维持远洋带中甲壳类生物、糖虾和磷虾的生物总量上起着举足轻重的作用。另一方面,它们也是更高一层食物链上生物的主要食物。大西洋鲱在生态学上所起的作用如此重要,但是人类还未完全探明其中的原因。一个可能的推测是,它们在生态学作用上起到的支配作用来自于它们生活在海量的并快速游动的群体中的习性。

地理上的分布[编辑]

大西洋鲱在大西洋的东西岸都可以发现。它们的分布区域相当之广,从北大西洋水域如缅因湾圣劳伦斯湾芬迪湾拉布拉多海戴维斯海峡波弗特海丹麦海峡挪威海北海波罗的海英吉利海峡凯尔特海爱尔兰海比斯开湾。虽然大西洋鲱在大西洋北部北冰洋周围的海域能被发现,但人们并不认为它们是一个在北冰洋生存的物种。

而大西洋鲱在波罗的海一带有一个学名为Clupea harengus membras的亚种,它在瑞典语中被称为strömming(普通大西洋鲱则被称作sill),体型比一般的大西洋鲱小。瑞典盐腌鲱鱼正是由这种波罗的海鲱鱼制成的。

特征[编辑]

鲱鱼形成了最为壮观的集群鱼类。它们聚集成一个由千百万个体形成的鱼群。 这些鱼群横渡大洋。一个鲱鱼群在总体上有非常精确的安排,以使鱼群能够维持一个相对稳定的巡游速度。由成千上万个个体组成的鱼群一般循一个三角形路线在它们的产卵地、索饵场和育苗场进行迁徙。其目的是为了保证后代得到充足的食物。

一个鲱鱼群能做出很快的反应以规避捕食者;它们有很敏锐的听觉。在潜水员和无人遥控潜水器的周围,鱼群能形成一个完全没有任何个体在内的空间,类似一个液泡。对此有很多解释:比如为了迷惑捕食者、为了将减少被个体被发现的危险、更好定位方向等等。同时集群生活也有不利的一面,比如氧气和食物的消耗过多,排泄物也会在呼吸介质中积累。

栖地条件[编辑]

大西洋鲱一般而言是非常脆弱的鱼,他们有特别大且敏感的表面,接触异物可能会使他们失去鳞片。虽然在一些被清洁过的河口可以观察到大西洋鲱的回流,但因为水中的高度污染使他们从世界各地的河口撤离,幼鱼的出现被作为水质洁净度和含氧量的生物指标。
