狮子座流星雨
狮子座流星雨 (Leonids[ˈli.əˌnɪdz] lee-uhnids)是与周期大约33年的坦普尔·塔特尔彗星有关的一个流星雨。狮子座流星雨的得名是因为这个流星雨辐射点的位置在狮子座。在2009年,这个流星雨的尖峰时间在11月17日(世界时),每小时的数量可能高达500颗,尚不足以成为流星暴(每小时超过1,000颗流星的大流星雨)。[1][2][3]
地球经常会通过彗星残留下来的流星体质点溪流,在这种溪流里包含了许多固体的流星体颗粒,而这些颗粒是彗星在接近太阳到木星轨道之内后,被太阳加热使冰冻的气体蒸发而连带被喷射出来的,且典型的颗粒不大于尘埃的大小。流星主要的来源是流星体与空气分子摩擦并汽化的尘埃 [1] (页面存档备份,存于互联网档案馆), 并且这些微小的碎屑与大气层内单独的原子碰撞会造成空气的游离。当空气的分子重新结合时,温度会降低并释放出光子。较大的颗粒会与较小的颗粒流分离,形成火流星或是火球,并在大气中留下发光的轨迹。狮子座流星雨以有许多如此明亮的流星而著名。彗星每次回归时都会在相似的轨道上留下许多的流星体,它们的差异是受到木星的扰动造成的(完整的说明请参考McNaught & Asher (1999) (页面存档备份,存于互联网档案馆))。历次回归的尾迹一起组成流星体的溪流,可是古老的尾迹已经不能产生壮观的流星雨(每分钟只有几颗流星),因此虽然每年的11月17日都有流星雨,但每年的流星数量都会变化[4]。换言之,越年轻的尾迹在太空中有著越高的粒子浓度,当地球经过时也越容易形成流星暴,相较于周年的背景流星(每小时1到2颗)和流星雨背景(每小时数颗),每小时可以计量到超过1,000颗以上的流星[5]。

狮子座流星雨最早的一次观测是在1833年11月12日的美国东部。到19世纪末,由于行星摄动远离地球,无法观测。但是到1966年11月17日,狮子座流星雨又重新出现,1998、1999、2001年的狮子座流星雨皆使全球天文爱好者为之雀跃。亦因为1998年之狮子座流星雨之预测失误,修正了流星雨预测的精细方法。1998年的狮子座流星雨预测时间早于实际时间约24小时,导致大批观测者空守夜空。
