在2008年Kerrang!的采访中，托马斯·霍洛帕尼回忆道：“为四张专辑做这种真正的管弦乐和交响乐，你就必须为接下来行动采取准备，而且要准备10步开外，我们就是这样告别伦敦交响乐团的。在当时，我们的确有财力这么做。这就像我们的第二次突破性进展；Oceanborn（1998年）让我们走红，并把我们带入了一流的阵营。在我们看来，音乐方面可说是相当悠闲，因为乐队的每个人都真正了解自己的风格。所以我们基本上花了两天时间，躺在沙发上，享受这些人演奏我们的歌，享受每一刻。这是我生命中最奇妙的经历之一。他们演奏最早演奏的歌曲是《Ghost Love Score》，我们不知道这会发生什么，但我只是想：这不可能发生！”[3]

专辑延续了上张专辑《Century Child》中更简化的音乐方法，并更加淡化了早期专辑中以力量金属为主风格的影响，专辑显得更平易近人。和上张专辑《Century Child》中11首歌有9首采用了全管弦乐不同，在本张专辑中管弦乐由非芬兰的伦敦爱乐乐团负责。而在夜愿的第六章专辑《Dark Passion Play》中，亦采用了这种方法[4] 。

《Once》收录了一首芬兰语《Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan》，这是他们第二张收录长度完整芬兰语歌曲的专辑[4]。乐队还为这首专辑增添了新的元素，如加入即兴合唱和鼓点合成的《Wish I Had an Angel》，以及融入美洲土著气道吟咏的《Creek Mary's Blood》[4]。歌曲《Ghost Love Score》正如其名所暗示的，充分显示了管弦乐队和夜愿的合作[4]。
