神秘生物由神秘動物學研究，其中細分為神秘動物學及神秘植物學。這類生物是被少數人發現其可能存在的證據但未被真正發現，是否存在備受爭議，即使存在也可能與人們的想像有所不同。

此分類用於收錄已確認為騙局/惡作劇與虛構的神秘動物。[註 1]

已證實存在的神秘生物[編輯]

過去曾被認為是騙局（如鴨嘴獸）、神秘動物（如㺢㹢狓）以及滅絕生物（如矛尾魚）[註 3]但經科學確認存在的神秘動物將會自動移至動物學，此分類用於歸納曾經與神秘動物學相關聯的未滅絕動物。

疑似倖存的絕種動物[編輯]

該分類用於收錄那些滅絕後但仍有目擊的生物，需注意的是，並非列表中的每種生物於現在都仍有目擊，它們中許多已經不再有新的目擊報告。
