他生於英格蘭紹斯波特。成長於伍斯特郡的Malvern。他獲得了肯特大學比較文學英語文學美國文學)碩士學位。

他曾在意大利西西里島居住過一年,後來移居日本的廣島市,在此教授英語和寫作達8年時間[3]。現在他居住在愛爾蘭南部。
