超現實主義（法語：Surréalisme，荷蘭語：Surrealisme），指的是一種從法國巴黎和會開始的文化運動，直接地源於達達主義[1]，於1920年至1930年間盛行於歐洲文學及藝術界中。其理論背景為弗洛伊德的精神分析學說。強調直覺和潛意識的藝術風格。給傳統對藝術的看法有了巨大的影響。也常被稱為超現實主義運動。或簡稱為超現實。

超現實主義作為一種思潮得到確立，是此派理論家安德烈·布勒東於1924年在巴黎發表第一篇「超現實主義宣言」以後。在宣言中他給超現實主義下了定義：「超現實主義，名詞。純粹的精神自動主義，企圖運用這種自動主義，以口頭或文字或其他任何方式去表達真正的思想過程。它是思想的筆錄，不受理性的任何控制，不依賴於任何美學或道德的偏見」，「超現實主義將夢境與現實之間的衝突消解，創造出一種絕對的現實——也就是超現實」[2][3][4]。

人們對這場超現實主義運動瞭解得最多的是無法確認的原理和超現實主義文學作品。藝術家將作品畫的像照片一樣，製造出讓人感到不舒服，覺得不合邏輯的意象，在作品中把日常的東西變為怪異的生物，還發明了許多利用無意識去表達自我的畫畫技法。

超現實主義作品的特點大多是驚訝元素，強烈反差物體的並列（英語：Juxtaposition）和反邏輯（英語：Non sequitur (literary device)）。但許多超現實藝術家不僅將他們的作品看作一種藝術，更將他們看成一種哲學和一種寶物。布勒東明確指出超現實主義首先是一場革命運動，自這以後，超現實主義運動又增添了共產主義和無政府主義的元素。

超現實主義源於字符主義運動，在第一次世界大戰期間最主要的文化活動中心在巴黎。1920年以後超現實主義運動蔓延至各個領域，最終影響全球多個國家及語言的視覺藝術，文學，電影和音樂，乃至政治思想及政策實施，哲學及社會學理論。

紀堯姆·阿波利奈爾創造了術語「超現實主義」，人們第一次在他戲劇作品《蒂蕾西亞的乳房》的序言中了解到這個詞，作家在1903年完成這部戲劇，首演於1917年。

第一次世界大戰使很多在巴黎活動的作家和藝術家四散，期間達達主義運動陷入停滯，達達主義者認為過度的理性思想與中產階級價值觀為世界帶來了令人髮指的戰爭，他們以反藝術的集會、表演、文章和藝術作品反其道而行之。戰爭結束後，他們回到巴黎，達達主義運動繼續進行。

藝術上的表現以探索潛意識和世界中的矛盾為主，如生與死、過去和未來等，超現實主義的畫家也為了表現這樣的奇發異想，大多運用拓印法、黏貼法、自動性技法等，特殊的表現技法來創作。另外為了表現想像與真實世界的扭曲或矛盾，他們也常常採用精細而寫實的手法來表達超現實的世界，甚至出現幽默的效果。以前人們曾說過，沒有一個原因，就沒有任何的超現實。而這裏的超現實，正式引進超現實主義化作的東西。
