「編輯獨立性」一詞定義較為模糊，英文語境中經常會不加定義的使用。但是各來源中，有以下共識：
- 政府出資媒體依舊可能具有編輯獨立性。[1]
- 其中，美國政府出資媒體，具有 "statutory firewall" 以保障新聞編輯獨立性。[1]
- 編輯獨立性包括，但不限於，收集及報導的獨立性（即只有新聞機構內部人員可以對前述內容作出決定）、不受到可能影響專業報導的外界壓力（包括政治因素、商業因素）。[2][3][4][5]
- 編輯必須要能夠不受阻礙地報導涉及所有者及涉及商業利益的爭議性話題。[4]
- 編輯獨立性對於保障報導專業至關重要。[2][3][4]
- 編輯獨立性是讀者對新聞媒體/學術媒體信任的條件之一。[4]
同時，某些來源有更加嚴格的要求：

- 為解決編輯爭端而進行人事處理會危害新聞獨立性。[4]
前述來源包括重要學術期刊的編輯報告/聲明，學術人員作出的評論和行政規定。這當中有一些並非是維基百科的傳統來源，但尚屬可靠來源。其中，英文維基百科對此的定義受到了 Journal of the American College of Radiology 的編輯 Howard Fleishon 醫生的認可。[5]
美國曾經有過報紙受政黨嚴重影響的時代，但是在一次總統大選前後，美國的新聞媒體發生了巨大變革。[6]
