美瑾在1981年8月4日，清晨4時46分生於洛杉磯卡諾加公園的西部公園醫院出生[6]。母親多利亞是非裔美國人，父親湯瑪士是歐裔美國人。父母在她六歲時離異[7]。她自小在私立學校接受教育，就讀天主教女子高中。2003年，美瑾在西北大學畢業，主修戲劇及國際研究，期間曾在美國駐布宜諾斯艾利斯大使館（英語：Embassy of the United States, Buenos Aires）實習[8]。

據美瑾透露，由於自己的種族較為模糊，在演藝界打拼的時候遇到了不少困難，「想演黑人角色但皮膚不夠黑，演白人角色皮膚又不夠白」[9]。

美瑾第一次在銀幕上亮相是參演日間肥皂劇《綜合醫院》（General Hospital），在當中扮演了一位小護士[10][11]，而美瑾的父親是該劇的燈光總監[12]。隨後美瑾客串了《世紀城（英語：Century City (TV series)）》、《家庭戰爭》、《CSI犯罪現場：紐約》等電視劇[10]。

2018年3月6日，在坎特伯里大主教積斯甸·韋爾比的主持下，美瑾受洗並行按手禮，加入英格蘭教會[59]。這場不對外公開的儀式在聖占士宮舉行，洗禮的水來自約旦河[59]。兩人的婚禮定於5月19日在溫莎城堡聖佐治禮拜堂舉行[60]。成婚後，夫婦倆以肯辛頓宮的名義入住倫敦諾定咸小屋（英語：Nottingham Cottage）[61]，而美瑾成為英國公民尚需數年的過程[62]。

  • 2018年5月25日，肯辛頓宮發佈了修適士公爵夫人的紋章[84]。盾形紋章的左半部來自哈里王子的紋章；右半部中，藍色的底象徵與公爵夫人故鄉加州相鄰的太平洋，兩道黃色的斜紋象徵加州的陽光，三根羽毛則象徵溝通和文字的力量。紋章底部則繪有花菱草與蠟梅，其中，花菱草是加州的州花，而蠟梅則是肯辛頓宮中的植物。左方的護盾獸是代表皇室、哈里王子的獅子，右邊的護盾獸則是公爵夫人選擇的鳴禽[85]。
