安伯托·艾可（意大利語：Umberto Eco，意大利語：[umˈbɛrto ˈɛːko]，1932年1月5日—2016年2月19日）是一名意大利小說家、文學評論者、哲學家、符號學家和大學教授。除了嚴肅的學術著作外，著有大量的小說和雜文，長年給雜誌專欄撰寫以睿智、諷刺風格見長的小品文。最馳名的作品為1980年小說《玫瑰的名字》（Il nome della rosa），他之後寫了其他小說，包括《傅科擺》和《昨日之島》。他的小說《布拉格墓園》於2010年出版，在意大利的暢銷書排行榜上排行最高位。艾可生前任教於博羅尼亞大學，居住在米蘭。

生平

艾可出生於意大利皮埃蒙特大區亞歷山德里亞。其父古里奧是一名會計，一生中曾經被政府徵召參加了三次戰爭。在二戰期間，艾可與母親喬瓦娜搬到皮德蒙特山區的一個小村莊居住。艾可共有12個兄弟姐妹。

艾可年輕時尊從父願進入都靈大學學習法律，隨後輟學，不顧父親反對而改學中世紀哲學與文學。於1954年獲博士學位，博士論文是有關基督教神學家托馬斯·阿奎納的研究。其後艾可成為Radiotelevisione Italiana的文化部編輯，同時在都靈大學任教。

此間，艾可與一些前衛藝術家有密切的接觸。這些人這對他以後的寫作有重要的影響。

1962年9月，他與Renate Ramge結婚。Renate Ramge是一名德國藝術教師。

艾可於2016年2月19日晚上在他米蘭的家中因胰臟癌而去世，他患了胰腺癌已經兩年了。在他84歲去世時，他是博洛尼亞大學的榮譽退休教授，自2008年以來一直擔任該職位。

學術觀點

艾可的學術作品強調中世紀美學理論與實踐的巨大差異。對於此，他如此說：「（中世紀美學）在理論上是一個由幾何與理性構架的有機體，然而在實踐中卻是一種完全不設框架的由形體與意象自然生成的藝術生命」。艾可於1959年發表了他的第二本書《中世紀美學的發展》（Sviluppo dell'estetico Medievale），一舉奠定了他在中世紀研究與文學界的地位。

艾可的哲學論著大多都與符號學、語言學、美學與倫理學有關。

1995年，艾可在《紐約書評》發表了《永在的法西斯主義》，指出了法西斯主義的十四個特徵。

小說作品

艾可的小說創作有一個顯著的特點，那就是小說的情節都是令人眩暈的複雜。讀者需要對歐洲中世紀的歷史文化——特別是基督教教派的發展史有一定的了解，否則很難理解小說的內容，甚至完全迷失，不知所云。這和他的學者出身顯然不無關係。因此他的小說被評論為典型的「知識分子小說」，翻譯與閱讀都需要很高的知識修養。

玫瑰的名字

這本小說是以14世紀天主教方濟各會進行改革的活動為背景。故事發生在一間北意大利的修道院中。書中幾乎所有的主要人物都是修士。主要的情節是一個連環謀殺案以及方濟各會教會與教宗的辯論。故事的核心是修道院的巨型圖書館。所有的情節都圍繞着圖書館中所藏的秘密展開。作者將中世紀神學與哲學的概況通過一個類似福爾摩斯的人物用現代的政治經濟觀念幾盡詳細地展現出來。故事的結尾，巨型圖書館付之一炬。故事的主人公（此處他代表書的讀者）試着用僅存的殘破無序的資料重建圖書館。

小說出版後引起轟動，並被改編成了同名電影《魔宮傳奇》。

傅科擺

《傅科擺》是艾可的第二本小說。小說的劇本也是以中世紀的基督教發展史為背景。書中三個主人公都是現代米蘭的小雜誌社編輯。他們都對一個流傳歐洲近千年的傳說有非常大熱情——這就是有關聖殿騎士的傳說。三個主人公最開始僅僅是在玩一個以文字與學術研究為基礎的「遊戲」。後來他們發現他們被捲入這個遊戲之中無法脫身，甚至有生命的危險。

昨日之島

這部小說以十七世紀歐洲各國為了航海霸權的需求，千方萬計尋找經線的定位方式，並帶出了本初子午線的定義，以及日際換日線的所在——區分「昨日」和「今日」的一百八十度經線。本書輔以當代的許多真實事蹟與人物作為背景，比如法國的前後兩任首相黎塞留和馬薩林，作者安排主人翁穿梭其間，增加作品中的歷史感。

波多里諾

這部小說於2000年出版。本書的主人公為十二世紀的農村之子波多里諾，他在被紅鬍子腓特烈收養為義子之後，參與了腓特烈皇帝一朝的各種大事；並與一群朋友一起偽造了許多與東方的神秘基督教國度——「約翰教士國」——相關的書信、神蹟與各式奇特的景物。本書在讀者面前展現了龐大、繁雜的中世紀世態。
