早期生活

帕利坎于1923年12月17日在俄亥俄州阿克伦出生。 父亲大雅罗斯拉夫·简·帕利坎（Jaroslav Jan Pelikan Sr.）是斯洛伐克人，母亲安妮·布泽科娃·帕利坎（英文：Anna Buzekova Pelikan）是塞尔维亚人。父亲是芝加哥三一斯洛伐克路德教会的牧师，祖父则是福音路德教会联盟（英文：Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches，后易名为美国斯洛伐克路德教会）的主教。

根据亲人描述，3岁时帕利坎的母亲已教会他如何使用打字机，这是由于当时他连笔都未能拿稳，就已经想开始写作。他的语言天分来自多语言的童年成长环境，此也帮助其日后踏上研究基督教教义历史之路（为此放弃当钢琴家），并精通天主教、基督新教及东正教的神学。

在1946年、踏入22岁那年，他获得协同神学院神学院学位及芝加哥大学博士学位。

写作与访问生涯

帕利坎写了多达30本书，当中包括他的五部曲名著——《基督教传统：教义演变历史》（1971-1989）。后期著作专攻大众市场，如《跨世纪的玛利亚》、《跨世纪的耶稣》、和《谁的圣经？》等。

1983年的杰斐逊讲座（英文：Jefferson Lecture）名为《传统的证明》（The Vindication of Tradition），当中包含他的名句； 此名句在1989年《美国新闻与世界报导》的访问中加以延伸：“传统是死人的活信仰，传统主义是活人的死信仰。传统活在有关过去的对话中，让我们纪念我们当刻所在之处，而我们此刻身处的境况将由我们自己决定。传统主义则相信从最初就没有什么可以做，所有所能做的只是回到一个早已假设一致、且单一的传统。”

耶鲁教学

1962年在耶鲁大学担任提多街教会历史教授（英文：Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History），1972年升任斯特林历史教授（英文：Sterling Professor of History），直至1996年升为荣誉教授。1973至1978年期间曾担任研究院副院长及院长。1984至1986年、以及1995年秋季学期是威廉·克莱德·迪瓦尼讲师（英文：William Clyde DeVane Lecturer）。所获得的奖项包括1979年由研究院颁发的威尔伯十字奖（英文：Wilbur Cross Medal）及由美国中世纪学院颁发的哈斯金斯奖（英文：Haskins Medal）。在耶鲁期间，帕利坎赢了一个由《田野与流水》赞助、艾德·策恩（英文：Ed Zern）策划的翻译比赛。此比赛在策恩的专栏《离开欢笑》（英文：Exit Laughing）上刊登，并要求参赛者翻译麦迪逊大道竿、枪、血腥玛丽和拉布拉多犬慈善机构（英文：Madison Avenue Rod, Gun, Bloody Mary & Labrador Retriever Benevolent Association）的名句---“留着你的粉末、你的鳟鱼飞钓和你的马丁尼鸡尾酒”（英文：Keep your powder, your trout flies and your martinis dry）---至拉丁文。帕利坎得奖作以马丁尼作首句，因为他认为前菜应放在首位。他的得奖翻译是：

帕利坎是美国知识分子圈的领袖，曾担任美国文理科学院主席，也是《大英百科全书》宗教部分的编辑，又于1980年创立美国国会图书馆学者委员会。

1983年受国家人文资助委员会（英文：National Endowment for the Humanities）邀请，担任第12届杰斐逊讲座（英文：Jefferson Lecture）的讲员。此乃美国联邦政府人文学科的最高荣誉，讲座内容也成为《辩护传统》（英文：The Vindication of Tradition )的根基。

1992至1993年在吉福德讲座（英文：Gifford Lecture）发表演讲。该届讲座在亚伯丁大学举行，讲题是“基督教和古典文化”。

美国总统比尔·克林顿曾邀请帕利坎加入总统艺术及人文委员会（英文：President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities ）。帕利坎曾获颁多达42个来自不同大学的荣誉博士。他又被委任为安嫩伯格基金会（英文：Annenberg Foundation）民主机构项目（英文：Institutions of Democracy Project ）的学者总监。

2004年和保罗·利科共同获得克鲁格人文与社会科学终身成就奖。他把所得奖金（50万美金）全捐给圣弗拉基米尔东正教神学院（英文：Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary）。当时他已在该校担任理事。在领奖当天细谈约翰·沃夫冈·冯·歌德的名句何以推动他的人生：“从你祖宗遗传得来的，尽力转化为自己的财产（德文：Was du ererbt von deinen Vaetern hast, Erwirb es um es zu besitzen ）。”

归信东正教

人生中大部分时间帕利坎是路德宗信徒和该会受按立的牧者。然而在1988年，他和妻子西尔维亚（英文：Sylvia）被美国东正教教会位于纽约州克雷斯特伍德（英文：Crestwood）的圣弗拉基米尔东正教神学院，获准正式加入该教并于该学院的礼拜堂举行仪式。据亲人说（虽然他们略有微言），改教让他有机会拜访教宗圣若望·保禄二世。他们甚至听他谈到改信东正教就如“回归至它那里一样，层层打开我的信仰才发觉原来东正教一直在那里。” 他曾把这番话多次告诉亲友，甚至在生前最后一次在圣弗拉基米尔的礼拜也说过同一番话。

尽管帕利坎改信为东正教徒，他仍然非常重视普世运动。在逝世前一年，曾在《纽约时报》为刚离去的若望·保禄二世写讣文道：“如果东西方教会存着包容且真诚的心，致力推行合一运动，此举可列为庆祝若望·保禄二世一生贡献的活动和回应若望·保禄二世的祈祷（这也包括自主后以来所有基督徒的祈祷）。”

死亡

2006年5月13日帕利坎因肺癌死于康乃狄克州哈姆登的家，终年82岁。5月17日葬在纽黑文的树丛街墓园（英文：Grove Street Cemetery）。他的纪念崇拜在10月10日于耶鲁的贝特耳礼拜堂（英文：Battell Chapel）举行，致词及演奏包括著名大提琴家马友友和耶鲁俄罗斯合唱团。
