美國是世界上發生大規模槍擊事件次數最多的國家[2][3][4][5]。大規模槍擊事件的定義通常為：除兇手自身以外，至少四人死亡的槍擊事件。雖然定義規定四人以上死亡才可稱「大規模」，但數據顯示在1967年到2017年間美國發生的146起大規模槍擊事件中，包括兇手在內，每起事件平均有8人死亡[6]。在這些事件中，槍手大部分最終採取自殺手段、或被擊斃，亦或被警方或市民制伏[7]。

定義[編輯]

因美國憲法第二修正案規定保障美國公民的持槍自由。自此在美國，公民不僅可以合法持有槍枝，而且取得方式也相對容易。但同時也造成美國是世界上槍枝暴力問題最嚴重的國家之一。目前，美國政府沒有對 「大規模槍擊事件」採用固定的定義[8]。不同的機構對其定義不同。如2003年1月，美國國會通過了一項有關暴力犯罪的法案（The Investigative Assistance for Violent Crimes Act of 2012），該法案定義「大規模殺害事件」為除兇手自身以外，至少三人死亡的事件[9][10][11]。2015年，美國國會研究服務定義大規模槍擊事件為「在事件發生及其相鄰區域內，至少四名受害者被槍擊殺害的多重殺人犯罪」[12]。非營利組織「槍枝暴力檔案」所使用的寬泛定義則是「除兇手自身以外，至少四人被槍擊（無論死亡與否）的事件」[13]，而此定義也往往為新聞界和非盈利組織所採用[14][15][16][17][18]。
