本模板可以使編輯者在建立單曲的排行榜時，依照特定的格式列明來源。如要建立專輯專用的排行榜則可以使用另一個相似的模板{{Album chart}}。

使用此模板可以生成一個包括國家及其使用的排行榜、來源、排行榜最高名次等資訊的表格資料，編輯者可以使用此模板產生的資料創建條目裡需要的排行榜名次的表格，詳細使用方法可以見下面的使用說明。

此模板並不能驗証單曲是否出現在排行榜上、及所在的最高名次，它只是讓為了創建排行榜名次的表格時可以有可靠的來源。模板所提供的來源資料也不會自動檢查可用性，未依指定格式使用模板可能會產生一個無法使用的來源。在使用該模板之前，編輯者應該先自行確認該模板的資料及連結無誤再儲存條目。

參數

所有的參數除了Chart identifier、Peak position、accessdate為必填、publishdate與refname為選填外，其他參數都應照著下面章節#使用方法依著各個排行榜不同的格式來填寫。

• (Chart identifier)或未填參數名稱時第一個值：排行榜提供者。填入的值必須為#使用方法章節中表格內「排行榜ID」下的任一值。有些值為國家或國籍（如：Spain、Spanish或西班牙），也有些為特定名稱的值（如：Billboardjapanhot100），有些排行榜有著一個以上的值，填入任一個值會得出相同的結果。
• (Peak position)或未填參數名稱時第二個值：最高名次。指單曲在排行榜所獲得的最高名次。
• song：單曲的名稱。不同排行榜所需填入的名稱略有不同，請在儲存前確認生成連結是否無誤。
• artist：專輯的名稱。如同song參數，不同排行榜所需填入的名稱略有不同，請在儲存前確認生成連結是否無誤。
• chartid：排行榜代碼。僅使用於特定幾個排行榜的來源連結中，應填入的代碼可在來源的連結網址中找到。
• url：來源網址。僅使用於排行榜來源連結較一般連結無系統者，將直接填入來源的連結網址。
• urltitle：來源網站顯示名稱。通常與url參數一起使用，將用來顯示來源連結出現在參考資料時的顯示文字。
• date：排行檔存檔的日期，格式為「YYYYMMDD」。僅使用於#使用方法中特定幾個排行榜，這類的排行榜通常只能查某一個時間中一整個榜，並不能查詢特定的一首歌。如其他排行榜要列出排行榜公佈的日期請使用publishdate參數。
• year與week：分別為四位數年份及二位數週數，僅用於特定幾個排行榜中。週數為01-53等二位數字，有些排行榜在1-9時前面不加0，詳細用法見#使用方法中介紹。這兩個參數用法與publishdate不同。
• note：用於標示歌曲特定的版本，用法如note=extended dance mix或{{singlechart|Australia|1|song=I'm the Urban Spaceman|artist=The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band|note=uncensored version}}。
• publishdate：排行榜公佈的日期，用於附註在參考資料中，建議使用ISO 8601的格式YYYY-MM-DD。
• accessdate：存取日期，用於附註在參考資料中，建議使用ISO 8601的格式YYYY-MM-DD。
• refname：用法同<ref name="name">，使參考料資一次可以附註多次於條目中，使用方法請見Help:腳註#多處標明同一項註腳。

輸出

此模板展開後會輸出一個有兩列資料的表格及一個參考資料。左列的資料標示排行榜的國家及／或排行榜的名稱，附有夾注在<ref></ref>標籤內的參考^[n]，如果有使用到note參數則會出現在左列的下方；右列則列出歌曲在榜中的最高名次，在表格內置中。

參考資料如其他的參考一樣會陳列在條目中<references />或{{reflist}}模板處。除非有另外指定，模板會自動為參考資料標注名為"sc_Chartid_artist"的參考資料，如：假設條目中使用以下模板

錯誤訊息

Other non-Billboard charts are not currently supported by {{singlechart}} and their use will need to be formatted and referenced manually (see the Brazil listing in Example 5 above). Be sure, however, not to use one of the deprecated charts. * These charts require the artist parameter solely for the purposes of internal reference naming using the default format (see Output above). If you are using the refname parameter to override the default naming, or you are sure that the references are not being reused in the article, you omit artist for the marked charts. The use of song and title are recommended for all charts, however.

Singlechart usages for chartname

This set of categories lists the calls for each possible chart name, i.e. Category:singlechart usages for Billboardhot100 contains all articles that have used the template to build a reference for the Billboard Hot 100. Note that alternate names are not handled gracefully: Category:singlechart usages for Denmark and Category:singlechart usages for Danish are separate categories.
