蒙克此前是舊金山警察局凶殺科警探，因其超乎常人的觀察和斷案能力在警界聲名顯赫。劇集開始前4年，他的愛妻楚迪遭遇汽車炸彈暗殺身亡，使其强迫症和恐惧症變本加厲，窩居數年閉門不出。蒙克在護士舍羅娜·弗萊明的幫助下走出家門，成爲警察局特別顧問，協助調查棘手命案。

第三季中期，舍羅娜的扮演者比蒂·施拉姆（英语：Bitty Schram）据称因“創意上的分歧”離開劇組，其角色也搬回新澤西州與前夫複合。隨後在第三季第10集《阿蒙與紅鯡魚》中，特蕾勒·霍華德（英语：Traylor Howard）飾演的單親媽媽委托人娜塔莉·提戈接替舍羅娜成爲蒙克的新助手。
