兩埃及的榮耀
兩埃及的榮耀是出現於古埃及法老斯尼夫魯時期造船計劃上的銘刻（約公元前2613年），這是史上第一件證明載名船隻的參考文物。[1]

斯尼夫魯時期所建造的大型埃及船隻大約長100腕尺（略長於50米），使用雪松木作為船體材料。[2]古代埃及缺乏樹木。尼羅河上最早的船隻是由蘆葦捆綁編制而成的。[3]世界上最早的關於國際間木材貿易的加載來自於巴勒莫石碑，其上提及了斯尼夫魯從腓尼基（現今的黎巴嫩）地區進口雪松木:
- 「帶回了四艘滿載雪松木的船隻。
- 船隻使用雪松木建造，每隻船（長）100腕尺……」[4]
在古代，一般使用城市的守護神的名字來命名船隻，含有希望船隻在海上平安之意。[5]
在古埃及，船隻則經常以法老的名字及其美德功業命名。例如，阿蒙霍特普二世（他於公元前1427年至1400年間統治埃及）的一艘船即被冠以「阿蒙霍特普二世，兩埃及繁盛的締造者」之名。[6]這艘船比斯尼夫魯的船隻——「兩埃及的榮耀」晚了大約1200年，而後者則是現今所知的最早的船隻名字。[7][8] 「兩埃及」意指上、下埃及。[9] 此船的名字有着一定的政治意味，現在學者認為此名宣示了上下埃及的統一。[10][11]
現在還不知道在斯尼夫魯時代，人們是否如今日一般把船的名字標識在船的一側，以便他方辨識。很可能當時的船隻使用了其他易於識別的標誌，因為當時尚沒有望遠鏡可供岸上或船上的人使用。這種特殊的標識將會成為船隻身份識別的手段。[12]
