水螅花屬^[1]又名管花木屬，為水螅花目唯一科水螅花科下唯一屬，共7種，喬木，都生長在南美洲西北和中美洲南部。以前的分類法將水螅花屬列入茶茱萸科，1998年根據基因去緣關係分類的APG 分類法認為應該單獨分為一個科，但無法列入任何一個目^[2]。2003年經過修訂的APG II 分類法甚至不承認這個科，只是將這個屬列為系屬不清範圍內^[3]。2009年的APG III 分類法承認水螅花科，為唇形類植物分支下的獨立科^[4]。2016年的APG IV 分類法將水螅花科置入單獨的水螅花目^[5]。
