THE JAMES PRICE COLLECTION. 255 collection itself was far from perfect, the SirJoshuas were all ugly pictures, three of the Turnershad suffered seriously, and the nomenclature ofmany was more than questionable. In spite ofthese and other defects, the ninety-one picturesbrought a total of over ;^87,i40. The picture ofthe day, and, indeed, so far as that goes one mightadd of the season, was the Gainsborough Portraitof Lady Mulgrave, an oval, 29 x 24, in white dress,black mantle, and hair potidrL Waltner has etchedthis picture, which thirteen years ago realized1,070 guineas, before, indeed, the boom in Gains-boroughs came into vogue. To what an extentthe fashion has changed may be gauged by thefact that the bidding for this portrait now startedat 5,000 guineas, and in a few minutes had reached10,000 guineas.
