At the time, it was passing over the western tip of Cuba, operationally as a Category 3 hurricane. A reanalysis project determined that the hurricane was a Category 5 hurricane - the earliest (as of Dec. 2012) documented Category 5. The weather map indicates five distinct closed isobars, and the central minimum pressure of the system is 920 mbar.
