"Helene was only a couple months old when her father Ernst, Gustav’s brother, died in 1892. Gustav took the guardianship of the girl and promised her mother help. The girl was the pride of the family and when she grew up, she joined the Flöge fashion house, helping with administration, bookkeeping and advising the clients. This portrait is dominated by the clear-cut bob hairstyle of the girl, which then is complemented by Klimt’s impressionistic rendering of her white blouse in just a few strokes."

La joven familia sufrió un duro revés con la repentina muerte de Ernst el 9 de diciembre de 1892. La pequeña Helene Luise había nacido el 28 de julio de ese mismo año y Gustav Klimt quedó como tutor de la niña, encontrando madre e hija refugio en sus familias. La muerte de Ernst puso fin a la Compañía de Artistas que integraban los hermanos Klimt y Franz Matsch. La joven viuda pronto encontró un empleo colaborando en la tienda de modas que las hermanas Flöge abrieron en Viena. También trabajará aquí Helene, primero como recepcionista para convertirse en co-propietaria cuando su madre fallezca en 1936. Cuando la casa de modas cierre dos años después, vivirá con sus tías en el 39 de la Ungargasse, donde fallecerá el 5 de enero de 1980. La pequeña Helene tenía seis años cuando posó en este delicado retrato al pastel, exhibido públicamente en 1898 y en la exposición de la Secession del año 1903. Viste un traje azulado y lleva un corte de pelo "a lo paje", mostrándose de perfil. En nariz, labios y mofletes se aprecian tonalidades rojizas que aportan mayor viveza al rostro. La figura se recorta ante un fondo neutro de tonalidades claras. El estilo recuerda al impresionismo, mostrando de esta manera Klimt su facilidad para tocar diferentes formas de trabajar hasta encontrar un estilo propio."
