北白犀（学名：Ceratotherium simum cottoni）又称北部白犀牛、北非白犀牛，是白犀的一个亚种。它们是牧食的，生活在北非洲草原及大草原林地。野外北白犀已经灭绝[2]，而且最后一只已知的雄性北白犀“苏丹”于2018年3月19日安乐死，享年45岁[3]；现存的北白犀全球只剩2只，而且全是雌性，北白犀已宣告功能性灭绝。对此，科学家搜集了北白犀的精子和卵子试图复育。
野生群落[编辑]
北白犀曾经分布在乌干达西北部、乍得南部、苏丹西南部、中非共和国东部及刚果民主共和国东北部。[4]
1970年代及1980年代之间的非法猎杀令其数量由500只减至15只。由1990年代至2003年间，其数量回复至32只。2000年的研究发现它们的数量在上升，可确定生存的共有30只，另有6只可能生存。[5]自2003年中后，非法猎杀再度猖獗，它们野外的数量急降至5—10只。[6]在加兰巴国家公园（Garamba National Park）的5只北白犀都已经死去，因此该物种已在野外灭绝。
最后在野外生存的北白犀均生存于刚果民主共和国的加兰巴国家公园。刚果民主共和国政府于2005年1月批准将5只北白犀由加兰巴国家公园移送到肯尼亚，并加强保育加兰巴，让这些北白犀有可重回的环境。[7]不过，移送未曾开始，这5只北白犀就已经死亡。
于2005年8月，地面及空中搜索发现有一只独居的雄犀，并包含一只成年雄犀和两只成年雌犀的群落。[8]到了2008年6月，由于没有再见到它们的踪迹，估计它们已经灭绝。[9]
人工饲养群落[编辑]
现存的北白犀只余2只，全部都是人工饲养[2]。两只母白犀在肯尼亚的奥佩杰塔自然保护区。
捷克的德武尔·克拉洛维动物园内有一只混种的雌白犀“娜比黑”，其母亲是北白犀，而父亲则是南白犀，于2015年7月27日死亡[2]。
2015年11月22日，全美国唯一一只的北白犀“诺拉”病逝于加州的圣迭戈野生动物园[10]。
2018年3月19日，随着北白犀最后一头已知的雄犀“苏丹”死去，北白犀已宣告功能性灭绝。
