本片获提名角逐第72届康城影展的金棕榈奖，并赢得酷儿棕榈奖[4][5]，成为第一部由女性执导的获奖电影[6]。导演席安玛凭本片赢得了第72届康城影展的最佳剧本奖[7][8] 。它另外还获得了独立精神奖、影评人票选奖和金球奖最佳外语电影奖提名，并被美国国家评论协会评选为2019年最佳前五外语电影。

十八世纪末，法兰西王国布列塔尼半岛上，女画家玛丽安受到伯爵夫人委托，为其刚刚离开修道院的女儿—艾洛伊兹绘制出嫁用的肖像画。艾洛伊兹因不愿意出嫁而拒绝被画，玛丽安必须在她不知情的情况下给她画画。玛丽安白天观察艾洛伊兹，晚上秘密地给她画画。两人之间的关系变得越来越亲密，她们一同分享最初和最后的自由时刻，直到玛丽安终于完成了艾洛伊兹的肖像画……

此电影于2018年10月开拍，主体拍摄共38天[9][10]。主要拍摄地点为法国圣皮埃尔-基伯龙的白港海岸以及塞纳-马恩省的拉沙佩勒戈捷（法语：La Chapelle-Gauthier (Seine-et-Marne)）的一座城堡里[9][11]。

片中的所有肖像画和素描实际上几乎都是由法国画家埃莱娜·德尔迈耶（Hélène Delmaire）完成的，她的手也出现在电影中[12]。
