This is an oblique view of an area in Mare Nubium west of the central lunar highlands taken with the Hasselblad camera on Apollo 16. The small picture to the left is the entire frame reproduced slightly larger (112 percent) than the size of the original negative, and the larger picture on the facing page (below) is a 12.5X enlargement of the area outlined within the small picture. The view shows two distinct types of lunar craters in the mare. The two craters in the near field are typical of a great many small impact craters. The larger one has a raised hummocky rim but no bright ejecta blanket and no visible rays. The smaller and probably younger one to the right displays an extensive hummocky ejecta blanket and a system of bright, radial rays. The dark crater near the middle of the photograph has little in common with the first two. It has a prominent, smooth, convex rim. It is not surrounded by a hummocky or blocky ejecta blanket and has no rays. These characteristics suggest that this crater is volcanic in origin. Occurrences like this indicate that both impact and volcanic processes were active on the Moon, and that they are both responsible for crater formation. However, as one can see in this view, impact craters are more numerous. F.E.-B.
