描述

English: Pelagic stingray (Pteroplatytrygon violacea), Cape Palos, region of Murcia, Spain. This species of stingray is found worldwide in tropical and warm-temperate oceans. It typically inhabits the open ocean from the surface down to 100 m (330 ft), unlike other stingrays which inhabit the ocean floor. The pelagic stingray has been reported to reach a width of 94 cm (37 in), though a width of 59 cm (23 in) is more typical. The predominant prey of the pelagic stingray are planktonic crustaceans, though it also takes molluscs, polychaete worms, small bony fishes, sea jellies, and comb jellies.
