纽约市的私有公共空间滥觞于1961年的土地使用分区政策。市政府提供奖励容积给地产开发者，以换得更多可供公众进入使用的公共空间。在纽约市，约有503处私有公共空间分布于320幢不同的建筑物内，其大多数在曼哈顿。[1]摆设座椅和设施的公共空间范围包含宽广的人行道到室内中庭。2011年占领华尔街期间，发生于祖科蒂公园的冲突引起国际对私有公共空间的关注。[2]
