贾里德·斯皮尔斯就读于伊利诺伊州迪卡尔布的北伊利诺大学，并获得了教育，商务技术的科学学士学位。贾里德·斯皮尔斯曾在芝加哥的大都会音乐学院学习敲击乐及作曲，在那里他获得了音乐学士及硕士学位。然后，他在芝加哥西北大学学习，并获得博士学位。

贾里德·斯皮尔斯曾在高中和大学中教授音乐理论、音乐历史、作曲及敲击乐长达32年。贾里德·斯皮尔斯是阿肯色州琼斯伯勒市的阿肯色州立大学名誉教授。

作为作曲家，贾里德·斯皮尔斯为管乐团、合唱团、管弦乐团及合唱团创作了300多部作品。
