Jedním z prvních kroků ke vzniku soustavné teorie o vývoji galaxií bylo klasifikační schéma galaxií, které v roce 1926 vyvinul americký astronom Edwin Hubble. Takzvaná Hubbleova ladička byla později rozšířena o další typy galaxií, původní myšlenka však stále přetrvává.
