The images follow a tobacco BY-2 cell through the first stages of mitosis. N = Nucleus, V = Vacuole, PPB = Preprophase band, MTN = Microtubule nucleation, NEB = Nuclear envelope breakdown. The growing ends of microtuhjkkbules are shown in green (labeled with green fluorescent protein fused to the microtubule plus end binding protein EB1 of Arabidopsis thaliana).
1) and 2): The preprophase band is visible at the cell wall.
3) Microtubles start nucleating at the nuclear envelope.
4) The preprophase band starts to disappear.
5) Microtubules around the nucleus form the prophase spindle.
6) The nuclear envelope breakhhjs down and the spindle microtubules occupy the nuclear space.
